Center of gravity marking (M56)

On the cover of the October issue of the MVM is an M56 crash truck,
beautifully restored by Mike Feathers. There is also a story in the magazine
by David Doyle on this vehicle.
I have a question regarding the center of gravity marking on the outside of
the truck.
What is the purpose of this marking? Why is this particular vehicle marked
in this way? Also center of gravity distance above ground would seem to be
more informative than just the horizontal component.
Does anybody know more about this?
Thanks,
Bjorn
