Hello to all,

I went to the Sears store in Dover, Del. today with an old broken
"Craftsman" pocket knife that had belonged to my late father. I asked the
salesman if the knives were included in the regular hand tool waranty. He
said some were and others that were made by (not labeled as Craftsman) had
the original manufacturers warrantee. He compared mine, which is an old
style no longer made, and found one similar to it which sells for $19.99.
He replaced my broken one with the new one. I didn't even have to sign
anything or give him any information. I tried to tell him where it came
from and he said it made no difference as the tools have a lifetime
warrantee which goes with whoever is in possession of it at the time it is
returned. The blade was obviously broken by prying something with it and I
told him so. He said it made no difference how it was broken, the warrantee
covers all damage to Craftsman tools.

I then asked about the replacement policy of tools like ratchets. He said
that if they have a repaired tool in stock then they can replace the damaged
tool with the reconditioned one. They keep some of all of the ratchets that
they sell on hand for this. He further stated that these reconditioned
tools also have the full replacement warrantee and that if they do not have
the replacement (reconditioned) in stock they can issue a new tool as a
replacement. The only reconditioned tools that they had in stock were the
ratchets. The reconditioned ratchets are clean and without damage to the
plating as damaged plating is considered a reason to return the tool. He
did not tell me that but I read it recently, that all or most of the major
tool manufacturers replace the tools that have the plating damaged as it is
a safety issue; ie cuts, pieces breaking off and getting into the eyes,
etc.

I am not a professional (anything) and can live with this policy. As far as
I can recall, this policy is really not different from what it has been.
