In the highest gear the engine only has enough power to peak out at 55-ish on level ground. (Have you removed the governor yet? That big bolt under the pedal that restricts you from flooring it? That will help!) In Deuces, the slightest grade and you need to downshift. Making the gears taller will give you a higher theoretical top speed, but the engine's not going to be able to push that much truck around in those gears, and it's going to strain all of the time.
So, after you change the gears you'll need to do some serious engine mods, or get another engine. I recommend keeping the current gears and converting to gasoline and getting an EFI 472" Stroker HEMI from http://www.moparengineswest.com/ - The biggest question is do you want less than 800HP, or more than 800HP? That should increase your top speed to just about 160Mph or more. VROOM! That would be one heck of a sight to see! It opens up all sorts of MV drag racing potential!

Guys -
I can't speak for all M35's, but mine would go faster on level road with an
overdrive gear. Like I said, I don't want to set the land speed record, just
5-10 more mph without winding up the engine.
Folks, the question was not why would I want to, or would I be guilty of
screwing up a rare truck, or I could kill myself driving it, but simply
could a person open the transfer case, re-arrange the existing gears on the
shafts, and come up with 1:1 and overdrive.
Just an idea. Nothing more.
