It also depends on the model transfer case. Some are splash lubed and some
have a gerotor type pump for lube. These are ussually found on the t-cases
that use Dexron ATF fluid. The pump is driven by one of the shafts and you
have to have that shaft turning to operate the pump. NVG transfer cases in
Humvees come to mind. On the HMMWV the pump turms when the vehicle is towed
while it is neutral. Best to check the manufacturer recommendations to be
sure.
