Jim,
I think the first things I'd check would be Ignition timing ( "late"
timing ==no power) since igniton occurs after TDC or during down stroke
of piston.
Next, I'd check carb mixture adjustment and look for a vacuumm leak.
These are simple to do and can cause lots of irritating conditons.
Just my opinion of some place to start.
