A stupid Fuel Questions for MVs and such?

My M51, like a lot of MVs and other heavy gas powered vehicles, sucks a lot
of fuel.

Unleaded Gas is going for just less than $1.80 a gallon around me while
diesel is going for about $1.49 per gallon. I have no idea why this price
difference exists. I've never seen the price spread so wide.

Question:
Is it possible to mix diesel into gas at a fairly large ratio, like 25%
diesel to 75% gas and run the mixture in a normal spark ignition engine
without drastic modifications or major power loss.

I know that a lot of older tractors used to run on Kerosene, but start on
gasoline. Apparently gas was more expensive than kerosene way back in the
20's.

I know that some Briggs and Stratton engines of old were also similarly
equipped back in the 50's and 60's.

Like a lot of MVs, my M51 has two tanks. One could be 100% gas while the
other could be a mixture of gas and diesel. Switching between mixtures
would be simple.

Any ideas? Or experiences? Is this a totally stupid idea or ?

Dave
