Many years ago I was working for GMC truck dealership and trucks often came
to us "piggybacked" we had a shop made hoist frame on wheels - park trucks
roll this frame over them attach hand operated chain hoist to truck on top.
Pick it up just a little, remove all the stuff that had it hooked to pulling
truck and drive pulling truck out from under.

This was before rail shipments of trucks and cars so everything was
transported on highway.

GMC had a small "5th wheel" arrangement on frame of pulling truck that front
axle of pulled vehicle was fastened to. Series of timber blocks strapped,
bolted to frame for this to be attached to.

GMC often shipped a hookup that would have more than one truck "Piggybacked"
and sometimes even a pickup truck completely mounted on last truck of
hookup.

Our dealership was between truck factory and a school bus factory and it
was not unusual to see a school bus chassis -NO CAB AT ALL - just a wooden
little cab thing with wooden seat for driver and a piece of plastic for
windshield , in winter cab was covered in plastic- pulling 3 or 4 other
cabless chassis, sometimes the last one would be a shorter frame so it would
be mounted completely and reversed to equal load.

probably some military trucks were transported same way
