Dear Dave & List,
If as you say the selector mechanism , selectors , balls ,
springs Etc are in good order then the most likely cause is as you suggest
the syncro assembly .
As the teeth on the cone and gear wear they form an angle that on overrun
produces a thrust that will overpower the detente balls and springs and
throw the box out of gear . There is usually a detente on the selector
shaft and another on the syncro hub to hold 2nd , neutral , or 3rd check
this is sound . The only solution is to replace the gear and syncro assembly
, new may be costly .
BUT before you strip the box check that there is not excessive end float on
any shafts or gear assemblies ! This may be caused by worn thrust washers ,
broken or dislodges circlips or badly worn bearings .
The key to repairing gearboxes is VERY careful inspection of the parts .

The above is applicable to most gearboxes .

                                                               Good luck
NOEL
