Re: [MV] diesel fuel additive, emulsifiers vs demulsifiers

GM recently released a service bulletin discussing diesel fuel additives for
the 6.2, 6.5, and the Duramax 6.6 diesels. The bulletin, while they still
hold the stance that no additives are officially recommended, states that IF
one is to use them, they should handle water in the fuel via demulsification
instead of emulsification. Demulsifiers will aid in separating the water
from the fuel, allowing the fuel/water separator to do its job as intended.
Emulsifiers are designed to suspend water in the fuel, and can allow water
to bypass a water separator. Not good!
One of the most common emulsifiers is alcohol. Beyond that, it is difficult
to determine what brands use emulsifiers vs demulsifiers. However,
Stanadyne and Racor brands are known to use demulsifiers, and this is stated
in the GM bulletin. I do not know about any of the other brands.
