Yes it is possible to use points files , Swiss /
needle files , they are about 1/16" thick and about 5/16" wide and very fine
the best maker is Vallorbe - Switzerland . Hand /#2 cut about $5 will do the
job .
On the subject of files the easy way to clean /rejuvenate a file is to take
a piece of 1/2" copper pipe flatten the end then hold it flat on the file
and push across , the copper will soon adopt the tooth form ,removing all
the clogging , the file will be almost like new .

PS You might find a small half round useful for smoothing the rough edges
after the dogs have passed the lava rock .
