M35 Axle gaskets and hub seals

Greetings list,

I'm in the midst of replacing a wheel cylinder on my deuce, and as I
removed the axle shaft, I noticed a gasket there.. just as the manual
said there was. But when I asked about a replacement gasket when I
ordered my wheel cylinder, I was told to just use silicone sealant
instead. My personal feeling is that silicone is fine for what it is,
but if the thing was designed to use a gasket, then use a gasket.

Am I correct in my thinking on this subject? And if so, who has the
best price? I saw that TNJ Murray is advertising them for 2 bucks each
in MV magazine. Can I do better? Or should I just make my own and stop
worrying about it?

Also, if the hub wasn't leaking gear oil before I took it apart, and
assuming I didn't damage the seals when I removed the hub, is it safe to
assume that the hub seals are okay and don't need to be replaced? (If
they look okay that is)

Thanks as always!
