Greetings everybody! Yesterday while slaving my M1009 with the M275A2
tractor I noticed the belts squealing anytime there was a significant amp draw. The
belts were a bit loose so I tightened them up and went for it. No problems
slaving at all. Later in the evening I went to the grocery store (in the M275A2)
to get sodas. On the way down the road at about 55 MPH she pitched a belt.
In the process screwed up the other alt belt and the compressor belt. Also put
a hole in the radiator. On the way back home the second alt belt also went
away. So now I'm faced with radiator repair and belt replacement. This morning
I went to the auto parts store armed with NAPA numbers from Mark Blairs
website. The parts store carries Goodyear belts which I like. Parts dude has no
problem generating a number for the compressor belt but can't find a
crossreference for the alt belts. The NAPA number is 25-9746 and I presume this is a
matched set. No problem, off to NAPA. The NAPA parts guy says that the number
is no good and he cant help me. Crap!!! I have no belts to work with now.
Off I go to Ft Lauderdale to a buddys place. An hour later I arrive. He has a
couple of belts right there on the bench. Real surplus stuff off of a truck.
Woohoo, there's a Dayco number on this. Down the street to NAPA I go. The
parts woman (?) cross references it and says no problem. I remind her that I
need a matched set. Seconds later she returns with 2 belts. Not a matched set
at all. I tell her that I really want a matched set. She says "They are a
matched set, I checked them". The numbers on these belts was 25-9740. I pass on
these since I now have their number. I take my buddies belt back and head up
the highway to a parts store near my house. Parts store guy looks at the NAPA
number and says he can't cross reference it either. Dang, I can't win. I go
back to the truck to get the Dayco number that I didn't write down. What a fool
I've been so far. Now I'm going back home, a compressor belt in one hand and
nothing in the other. As I'm going down my street I remember that I have kept
a used set of belts around just in case I have a belt failure. Hope yet! I
open the garage door and the belts are hanging just where I left them 3 year
ago. I pull them down and check them out. The compressor belt, of which I
already have has numbers all over it. The alt belts do not. Either way I now have
a physical belt to take to the parts house and interchange. By the end of the
day I'll have Goodyear numbers available for all. My questions now. Are
matched sets still sold and how important are they? What else have others done for
belts? Better believe that once I have the right numbers in hand, I'll have
several sets here on hand just in case!
Kenny

PS, the 6.2 in the M1009 is still junk. Looking for a cheap used running 6.2
in the SE. I might have some bartering stock laying around.
