John: I am not a crawler expert but will give what little info I know. You are best going to an Allis-Chalmers mailing list. Those folks know their stuff!

"Track gauge" refers to the widt of the crawler from center to center of the tracks.

The HD-10 has a 62" track gauge. The HD-10W has a 74". That's the main difference. Most (but not all) HD-10Ws will have a serial number that ends with "W". HD-10Ws built before 1946 will have a serial number lower than 5964W. The serial number can be found on the back of the transmission case at the upper right corner. The engine number is on the right side of the block by the governor.

Gouser widths for the HD-10W cme in 6, 18, 20, 22, and 24". For the HD-10, only 16 and 18"

Weight of an HD-10W is 21,630 lbs. Weight of an HD-10 20,960lbs

A pre 1945 HD-10 or HD-10W will have 5 rollers per side (6 after 1945). A pre 45 HD-10 or 10W will have 32 shoes per track. After 1945, 34 shoes.

Just have a picture of an HD-10 (not scanned).

John,

What does it mean 74" track gauge? Pardon me, but I am ignorant to
crawlers. It measured 94" from the outside of the track to the outside
of the other track. The track was bout 14" wide. I am guessing at
that. As I didn't measure it. It was more concerned with the overall
width for getting it on a trailer.

He told me that it was a HD-10. It might be a HD-10W. Do you know
what the differences were?

How much does it weigh? No blade on the front. Just a drawbar hitch,
that swings in an arc.

Pictures?

Thanks,

John

Total production of the Model HD-10 Crawler was 10,197. They were
produced between 1940 and 1950. 1,760 HD-10W (74inch track gauge) were
used by the military carrying the nomenclature "Heavy Tractor M1". These
were painted OD. Original color was Persian Orange or yellow.

To summarize: HD-10W could be a military model. HD-10 most likely not.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [MV] Allis Chalmers (AC) HD-10 crawlers

Hey,

Does anyone know if the military had any Allis Chalmers HD-10
crawlers?
If so, can I get someone to send me a link to pictures or send me
pictures? I found 2 here in CA. One looks like it was painted OD,
then
an IH red color on top. I can't find any data plates other than the
shift pattern. The guy that owns them thinks they are in the 50-60's.

I think they are 40-50's. They have a GMC 4-71 engine.

Thanks,
