First, every state has different requirements. But before that comes into
play, as a rule tanks are essentially off road vehicles in much the same
manner as a show car or truck. They have no need for automotive insurance
because they are not operated on road. They are tailored to events. At this
point, there are several choices. You can of course hope for the best, but
it would behoove you to have some form of liability insurance for the idiot
who wants to test the theory of low ground pressure of tracked vehicles by
placing his leg underneath the tank as you are maneuvering it.

In this instance, an umbrella policy is the best solution. Generally, people
who own tanks tend to be of sufficient affluence to afford fuel for the
occasional charging up the batteries. It's amazing the things an umbrella
policy can cover. Talk to the insurance agent. For the coverage you get,
it is surprisingly inexpensive --- relatively speaking. Many business owners
already have such coverage. It is often not at all difficult to get
coverage amended.

There is another route, again which varies by state. That is Home Owner's
Insurance. It too can cover unusual situations. The important thing is to
discuss it with your agent before it is needed. Every company is different.
Often a rider can be whipped up to cover a specific need in no time at all.
As an aside, a rider to cover liability for one's tank can join the other
riders a home owner might need such as extra coverage for art collections,
electronic equipment, antique furniture, etc.
