Below is info about a FREE event scheduled for Memorial Day weekend at Ft. Knox. It is open to the public. To get on post you need photo ID, and if driving proof of insuarance and registration. Don't try to bring real (or fake) weapons on post without registering beforehand. There is also a mock WWII-era tank battle as described below.

The 2nd Annual "Life of the Soldier" living history encampment will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 29-30 in Keyes Park adjacent to Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor at Fort Knox, KY. The program will feature live authentically uniformed and equipped historical interpreters spanning more than 100 years of military history. The American soldier, as well as his allies and adversaries will be represented to answer visitor questions and conduct drill, weapons firing, and tactical demonstrations. The highlight of the program is the mock tank battles that are held twice daily at 11:30am and 3:00pm.

Memorial Day Weekend Tank Battle Scenario Narrative

The setting for the scenario has us in the German rear area as a roadblock is set up by a German Demag halftrack and Opel Blitz cargo truck full of soldiers towing a PAK 40 75mm anti-tank gun and a company of German infantry.

As this defensive position is being set up,a platoon of M5A1 Stuarts probing German lines is spotted and engaged by the live-fire antitank guns. Live (black) counterfire is returned by the Stuarts main and machine guns.

US infantry then assaults the roadblock supported by a 105mm armed M4A3 (live firing). This threat is countered by German armor in the form of Jagdpanzers (IV and 38T).

The vehicles, owned by both the museum and private collectors, are superbly restored and reenactors properly attired. Many, many more vehicles from all eras will be on display. Some of the normal indoor museum exhibits will be driven out, as well some of the 100+ vehicles the museum normally keeps in storage as well as privately owned vehicles.
