As Glen said this is a very real na d frequent problem with the GM diesel.
It's so common that lots of people sell the truck once they get a starter to
work. Many of the field repairs are very shoddy. Always check the block in the
starter area if you are buying a takeout engine. One ear of the block actually
breaks off on occasion from this problem. Can't emphasize that starter
bracket enough on these.
