I'm sure you are right about the "tractive force" of the tandems. I just
want to clear up the fact that the reason for the front tire wear is that
the tandem axles coupled together without a differential, will resist the
turning motion and pushes the vehicle straight ahead. This will happen with
or without matched tires.

There are other ways to free up the tandem axles (besides removing the drive
shaft), taking out one of the half axles, for example. A spare front hub
will fit in its place.
