Aaron,

What I do is remove it and try to blow through the bottom of it. You should
be able to blow through it by mouth, if not, head for the solvent vat and
compressed air nozzle.

Hmmm,

I've rebuilt the rear axle of my jeep twice already, and the darn thing is
always leaking. It could be the axle vent... How do I clean it, and how do I
test it to make sure it's working?

yay!

I said something similar Ken. I have seen users use that axle vent as a
grease fitting and blow the crap out of seals.

Sean, another thought worth saying. Sometimes the vent on the axle housing
(on carrier assy early models) gets clogged up. When the whole assy heats up
the
gear oil must go somewhere and that inside seal becomes suspect. I just skim
the inside of the hub assy to avoid bare metal after the solvent cleaning
them
pack the bearings.
Was there evidence of gear oil? Wonder if the cork piece was missing from
the
keyway?
