Yes, you can probably add a tach using the existing voltmeter.
On most of the M-series alternators there is an unused terminal that is connected to the stator (I
think) so this terminal outputs AC frequency proportional to alternator speed.
Part of the kit to convert a MUTT to a MRC-108 radio jeep is a box with a circuit card that changes
the AC to a DC so that it can be displayed on a volt meter with dual scales and a switch for RPM or
voltage. There's a picture of the meter on the muttguru's page at:

Since I have built a MRC-108, I was gonna expermint with the circuit but haven't got 'round-to-it.
