I read, with amusement, the various posts regarding Ebay bidding. There is a science to everything, and this is no exception. While I understand each person's reasoning, it WILL create "unwanted attention" to bid on an item in the early days of the auction. People like David Doyle, who put in the maximum bid as soon as they see the item, usually do so, because they are only mildly interested in it, or don't need it. I have used this system myself, for that very same reason. But, you are best served to wait and not create undue interest by numerous bids. This brings out the old "I'm not letting him/her have it for that!" competition attitude in most people. So, if you don't mind getting beat out by a dollar or so, then by all means, don't budge off of that high bid. As to Dr. Deuce's complaint about reserve prices, I would say that you have no conception of an auction. I have attended many auctions over the years, and every time the auctioneer always starts the item at it's approximate value--and gets NO bidders. So, he continues to lower the opening bid amount, and finally it gets extremely low. Then, all of a sudden, everybody has got to get in, and the next thing you know, they are bidding at or ABOVE what the auctioneer orignally started at. So, if you will watch Ebay auctions, you will notice that the auctions which start off at the approximate value usually receive NO bids. Check an active auction and you will find that it started off at a ridiculously LOW price. It's called UNDERSTANDING human nature. Just that simple.
