I'm going by memory (what's left of it) on this: New Jersey
The base weight for trucks is 5,000 Lb. GVW. This has a
set price. You then add to this base the difference of
its GVW and get charged in increments of 1,000 Lb. It
doesn't matter what the designated GVW by the manufacturer
is. Although my M35A2 has a GVW of 24,000 (round figure),
I only tagged it for 14,000. DMV doesn't care, it's my
hide if I load it and get weighed and I'm over.
I had to pay for 6,000 Lb. on my M1008, about what it
weighs empty. If I want to start carrying loads, I
should get my tag weight increased and pay the extra
annual registration.
