Diesel engine woes, M1009 timing chain?

Hello all,

Haven't posted here in a while. I have a couple projects going on right now.

Il'l start with the M1009. 84 M1009, 75,000 miles, runs great, no smoke,
sometimes a tad hard to start, usually just me not manually glowing it long
enough. What I have heard ever since I have gotten the truck just about a
year ago, is a noise coming from the front of the engine when idling. I will
be about 5 feet in front of the truck, and even further away, I can hear a
noise, its like ball bearings rolling around in a pot. like a clicking
noise, like the fan is hitting something, but its not. I pop the hood and
listen, but the engine noise is too much to hear it. I started up the fire
departments M1008 with 72k miles on it (I think) and it doesn't have the
noise. Is it possible it could be the timing chain on the M1009 making this
noise? I know average replacement is about 100k miles, but I don't know if
the chain had a bit of slap, if it could make such a noise. I had the oil
pan off a month ago, and I could feel the tension on the chain. I can't
remeber now, but one side had quite a bit of slack on it, and the other side
was tensioned, but not totally tight from what I could tell from the bottom.
I didn't think to do a full inspection on it then, which wasn't too bright.
So any ideas about that sound and what could cause it. I know its not that
alternators, doubt the PS pump, but not toally sure.

Second is the vegetable oil conversion. The 4cylinder diesel engine is off
of a Carrier Transicold cooling unit. The engine was made in 1980, in the
UK. Its a inline 4 perkins 4.108, or 4108. The problem with it is that it
has sat for about 8-10 years. Last date on the oil filters and fuel filters
were 91. I got it running, and it ran like hell, rough at WOT. I took the
injectors out and cleaned them, basically just cleaned stuff off the tips.
It runs ok now, smokes a bit at idle, and puffs a good amount of smoke,
like when an injector is misfiring or something, about every 3-8 seconds. At
WOT it smokes quite a bit more, and misses and puffs a bit of smoke, about
every 2-5 seconds. I pulled all the injectors out, hooked an injector to one
of the lines, and turned the engine over with the starter. It shoots fuel
about 4-8 inches, as a pretty straight and even stream, and about 12-14
inches out it starts to atomize and go into a mist. I know it doesnt have a
foot of space to atomize in the engine, so is the pop off pressure too low
and its not turing into a mist soon enough, and dumping too much fuel in,
hence the smoke? I tried all of the injectors, let them shoot for 2-3 times,
and they all preformed the same. Its kind of a low budget project, and I
don't feel like dropping $40-$70 each into new injectors. I know if I take
the return line rail off the toppof the all, there is a allen head in there,
is this the pop off pressure adjustment? The injectors are flat on the end,
with a little tiny tip sticking out in the middle. Any ideas for this is
greatly appriciated, I will try and grab some pictures if anyone is
interested.

Last, is my pictures project. I have pictures of my M1009, and soon to have
pictures of my M211 (soon to be FS) and the fire departments M35A2 and
M1008, and M107A2? (I think, water buffalo). If interested, visit the site
at http://pictures.defcon-3.net

Thanks in advance!

Caleb
