The brain must be a bit "Foggy" for the railroads in WW II did not haul
Government freight free. They hauled it at the Government rate which was
close to a 50 % discount from the civilian rate. This Government rate was a
leftover from the 1800's where the US Government granted the railroads a
lot of land if they built railroads to promote expanding the United States
of America. Part of the deal the Railroads accepted by accepting the lands
surrounding the rail lines they built was the railroads were REQUIRED to
provide the US Government with a permanent discount on all government
freight and troops. If MY semi failing memory suffices this government
discount wasn't forfeited by the US Government until the early 1950's.
