I have had mine in for 5 years so far with a regular filter which came with
it. No problems so far. Of course after saying that, I'm sure tomorrow
morning I might find out otherwise. Bought mine at local parts store. I
might of just been lucky!

Most of the electric pumps want an incredibly expensive filter installed in
the line upstream or they soon clog up and leave you with a voided warranty.
I toyed with the idea of rigging one up downstream of the existing Stanadyne
filter instead of installing it in-line using the existing setup near the
mechanical pump, but have never actually done it. I have killed a couple of
Carter pumps by *not* putting in the pre-filter though. Pricey lesson.
