That sure won't aid starting in cold weather. I guess you could use a 24v
power supply to the solenoid instead of the 12v when manual button used?
Will that bring it back to the 8 second heat time?

Not true. They heat significantly slower. I put them in a truck I'd
installed a manual pushbutton to run the CUCV-style glowplugs just to see
what would happen, and where you typically held the button about 10-12 secs
for the CUCV plugs, you needed about 20 secs for the HMMWV plugs.
