Some CUCV, M101 and diesel things from the TB 43-0001-39 series

ETM won't allow the TB 43-0001-39 series to be down loaded (without a PIN
and Password), but a google search will yield a couple of places (mil sites)
that do. By playing with the URLs, you can spoof the system to cough up some
of the PDF files for some of them. I've found ones for the following dates
on the web in PDF format: June, Sept, and Dec 95, March, June, Sept., Dec.
96 and March 97. I don't know if there are others in PDF, though I have seen
references to printed versions in the 1984 period . The series used to
provide updates to manuals between printings of Changes or reprints and is
titled :

Equipment Improvement Report

and Maintenance Digest for

Tank and Automotive Equipment

and covers vehicles still in inventory. HMMWV's have lots of entries, but I
have only found two covering the M44A2 series of trucks. Examples of the
type of things covered are:

GROUND SAFETY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM (GSNS)

 Safety of Use Messages-(SOUM)

General Maintenance Info Grouped by Vehicle

Minor Alterations

MWOs

Miscellaneous Technical Maintenance Info

Good hunting, Ronzo

PS Here are some of the tid bits.... Enjoy!

MODEL:

M1008 CUCV

SUBJECT:

Pro Nets for M1008 trucks

POC:

Mr. Darrel

DEFICIENCY:

CUCV M1008s currently use metal tailgates only.

COMMENTS:

As a result of an approved suggestion (ERCK910892), a nylon tailgate is
approved for M1008 trucks with

local commander approval. This universal tailgate net is made of 1 inch wide
nylon web and nylon corded

netting, and includes mounting hooks and hardware. Units can order from J.C.
Whitney Co., Chicago, IL

using P/N 12VY8050T, CAGE 7E570. The cost is $19.99.

MODEL:

CUCV/HMMWV Family Of Vehicles

SUBJECT:

Fuel injector pump line nut wrench

POC:

Mr. Darrel

.army.mil

DEFICIENCY:

CUCV/HMMWV fuel injector lines may require tightening to prevent leaking. It
is difficult to get to

injector lines on CUCV/HMMWV engines without removing a lot of components
first.

COMMENTS:

As a result of an approved Tool Improvement Program (TIPS) suggestion, an
injector pump line nut

wrench is approved for CUCV/HMMWV vehicles with local commander approval.
This tool is a 5/8 inch

Hex wrench utilized with a standard 3/8 inch drive extension. Units can
order this special Stanadyne

fuel injection pump tool from Kent-Moore Tools using P/N J28402, CAGE 33287.
The cost is $17.45.

Ohio Generator Starter NSN 2920-01-354-0409 (66022) P/N 313591

POC:

Mr. John

@cc.tacom.army.mil

COMMENTS:

A. The Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle (CUCV) is currently only being
supported by the new

Delco/Nippondenso starter, NSN 2920-01-353-7036, (16764), P/N 10479611. This
starter is sole source to

General Motors and must be repaired by local purchase of the down parts. The
repair procedures and

parts list are published in TB 43-0001-39-7, Dec 93.

B. The field has verbally reported problems with the new GM starter solenoid
burning out. Any

problem associated with this new GM starter should be reported with an SF
368 Quality Deficiency

Report (QDR) to U.S. Army TACOM, AMSTA-QRD, Warren, Mi. 48397-5000. Also,
the cost of the

solenoid is more than the starter ($297 vs $225), making repair for this
failure too expensive.

C. An alternative starter that can be used is the Ohio Generator starter,
NSN 2920-01-354-0409,

(66022) P/N 313591. This looks identical to the original equipment starter
and can be economically

supported by the current parts in TM 9-2320-289-34P since almost all parts
have the same form, fit, and

function as the General Motors parts. The only exception is seven internal
parts that are unique to Ohio

Generator. The following parts list is provided.

MATERIALS/PARTS:

These parts are the same between original GM and Ohio Generator:

Units who wish to obtain this starter must submit a DD Form 1348-6, with
exception data in the remarks

block, stating that the new GM starter NSN 2920-01-353-7036, (16764) P/N
10479611, is not acceptable

to: U.S. Army TACOM, AMSTA-FTMC, Warren, MI. 48397-5000.

PROCEDURES:

A. All repair procedures in TM9-2320-289-34, w/chg 2 May 92, will remain
essentially the same except

for changes on pg 4-29 and 4-34.

B. Pg 4-29; step 4 will be changed to read as follows: “If present, remove 4
screws (26) and washers (25).

Remove center bearing (19) and armature (17) assembly from drive gear
housing (1). Remove and

discard fiber washer (27).”

C. Pg 4-34; step 6 will be changed to read as follows: “Install new fiber
washer (27) on armature (17).

Install center bearing (19) and armature assembly on drive gear housing (1).
If removed, install 4

B. The Maintenance Expenditure Limit is presently at zero, however,
exception to the rule is; At the

end of the useful life of a vehicle, the time at which the MEL has reached
zero, repair expenditures will be

permitted only when necessary to retain an acceptable level of readiness in
a tactical unit.

C. The preferred alternative is to obtain parts required from salvage(DRMO).
In CONUS, the majority

of vehicles are located at (CANN POINT) Ft Hood TX; OCONUS is Kaiserlautern
(200 TAMMS

CONTROL) in Germany and DRMO Pusan Store, unit #15180, South Korea.

SUBJECT:

Conversion from Diesel Fuel to JP8

POC:

Mrs. Landis

@cc.tacom.army.mil

DEFICIENCY:

A. JP8 has a cleansing effect, it causes microbiological growth and other
fuel contaminants to break

free from fuel cells and lines. As these contaminants travel through the
fuel system, they plug up your

fuel filters.

B. JP8 also causes a slight decrease in the engine’s rated power, but will
have no effect on engine

durability. The slight power decrease is caused by JP8 having a lower energy
content than diesel fuel.

The power decrease will only be apparent when the vehicle is at full load.

COMMENTS:

A. JP8 is designated as the “Single Fuel on the Battlefield” as part of the
DOD Fuel Standardization

Policy. This means that eventually you will be converting to JP8 and you may
experience fuel filter

plugging.

B. The conversion process will not be complete for several years; it’s being
phased-in by regions. We’re

providing this information for your use as you are affected.

C. Although you may initially have problems due to the conversion, the
program goals are to:

(1) Provide a safer, less volatile fuel.

(2) Improve cold weather starting.

(3) Reduce the number of fuels on the battlefield.

(4) Increase tactical flexibility and POL logistics supportability.

D. The problems you experience are going to depend on the type of equipment
you have, how often you

operate it, climatic conditions, etc. For example, microbiological growth
will be more severe in fuel

systems that are rarely exercised and in high humidity areas. So when you
convert, initially, your filters

will clog more quickly and require replacement more often. If on the other
hand, you have a piece of

equipment that you use on a daily basis and you’re in a fairly dry
environment, you shouldn’t have too

bad of a problem.

PROCEDURES:

Replace fuel filters as needed. On the average, your fuel filter plugging
problem should go away after two

complete refuels.
