Dan,

My 1972 AM Gen. M35A2 non turbo runs best at around 55 - 58 mph as an
average top speed. It will not start the day doing this amazing feat but
has to be run hard for about an hour, then it's like flipping a light
switch. On really long straight and fairly level stretches will hit 60 or
so. When the engine is feeling good you can feel and hear the difference.
There is also a noticable loss of the smoke screen when things are "right".

I have also found that with mine, it will not have the RPM's with the foot
pedal as I can get with the hand lever throttle. The hand throttle catches
just enough more RPM's to make the difference in shifting gears going up
hills and on the straightaways. With the pedal I can only get to about 58
MPH the hand throttle "Cruise Control" <grin> gets it above 60 on a good
day. The load in the truck dosen't seem to matter much but pulling the
M105A2 trailer does slow it down.

My truck is in pretty good shape so I think it is doing about all it is
expected to do. I have been told by several ex-Army mechanics that it can
be adjusted to speed it up and give it a boost in power. However, I have
turned down their offers to do so as none guarantee that the end result
won't be a mass of melted metal under the hood.

Hope this helps, Bill K.
