The smell comes from the mildewcide (spelling?) and the bacteristat
that is applied to the canvas when it is dyed and finished.
They are potent poisons, designed to do just what it sounds like,
prevent the growth of mildew and various bacteria. They are bad stuff,
even if id does smell good in reasonable amounts.

Check with a local commercial laundry such as a linen supply company
not an industrial laundry that does uniforms and not a laundromat or
dry cleaner. They regularly use the stuff on bar towels and such for
the same reasons. Get the name of their chemical supplier for wash
chemistry.
