RE: [MV] 1008 CUCV top & rails

The rails fit length wise except for the holes not lining up. The stake
holes don't quite match up with the cutouts in the rail like in the book
either.

Hi Stu,
There are evidently to styles of those rails with the turnbuttons on
them. some are
shorter than the others. I ran into this problem myself.

First find a cargo cover, if you havent't already. Then set it up on the
ground over a picnic table
or boxes. secure it to the bows and make things look tight. You will
have to improvise with
2x4 s or something.

Now that you have it all mocked up, get the rails and see how they
attach to the turnbuckles.
The discrepancies should stick out like a sore thumb.

The first thing to get figured out is the placement of the bow base
supports relative to the rails.
You may need to drill new holes in the rails. Once this is done, bolt it
together, still off the truck.

The next place to look is at the end of each rail where it is next to
the tail gate.
You will find that the last turnbutton doesn't line up exactly with the
last hole on the cover.
If this is true, I would suggest welding on a little more angle and
extend it out so that it is
right at the end of the bed rail, or cut and weld a patch to extend it
to the end.
This will make everything nice and tight.

Once this is doneyou will have to mount it on the truck. Before you do,
measure carefully the
distance between the turnbutton rails on each side. This will tell you
where the rails have to be
placed on the bed sides.

I would suggest getting an 1/8" piece of flat that will fit up under the
surface of the bed side if
you will need to drill holes that are to close to the old ones. Secure
it with some flat head bolts
after the appropriate counter sinking. Be sure to prime and paint this
before bolting
it in place.

Anyway, those are my 2 cents on this.
Good Luck,
If that doesn't work, you can always try Sonny's idea......:-)
