MV Seats, Taxonomy, Apples, Hoovers,HMMWVs & etc

Hi Chris and list,

To try and get this debate back somewhere on the MV platform. This is going
to be pedantic but fundamentally is about purpose, recognition (how far we
want to go).

I enjoy eating apples both from the tree and cooked, most people know that
there are a great variety of apples and have their own favourites for
flavour, texture, juice content - anyone who makes an apple pie knows that
while some apples will easily retain their texture when cooked others break
down into a soggy puree. Anyway we make choices on what apple we are going
to eat and few of us eat any of the wild apples (generally they don't taste
that great) so we choose cultivars (Cultivated varieties) and these all have
names of which we recognise usually our local ones. In this case propagation
is usually by taking a cutting and grafting to a wild rootstock because
apple varieties in general are cultivated hybrid and the seed reverts to
species which is not what we want to eat. At this point we need to
differentiate the needs of two groups of people A) the consumer and B) the
specialist grower: A needs to know and recognise enough to get the apple for
his taste and use, B on the other hand will likely want to know the whole
antecedence to ensure he grows the intended crop efficiently.

Moving on. In many places the word hoover has become synonymous with vacuum
cleaner for the simple reason that Hoover were an early manufacturer of a
popular, very widely distributed vacuum cleaner this led to people referring
to their 'hoover' as opposed to their 'vacuum cleaner' which is all very
well until you want spares for the infernal machine. At this point it is
required to be much more specific (make, model, power, voltage) and may even
need a serial number.

Now to the HMMWV which I am sure most of us would recognise or would we.
This is a MOWAG Eagle 111 AFOV (Artillery Forward Observational Vehicle)
http://www.mowag.ch/Images/Produkte/Eagle/Ablage_01/SKdtFz_04_gross.gif
I also have a notion that the Achleitner Fennek is another HMMWV derrivative
and perhaps one of our list EXPERTS could tell me that answer.
Variants almost beyond immagination but the MOWAG is essentially a
customised HMMWV, even if you had the vin (vehicle identification number)
and engine number it might not help you with some of the spares on one of
these.

Bottom line in all this is that we need language for modern survival and
beyond this we need ever more sophisticated language to satisfy our wants
and sometimes needs. Our own exMVs are what ever we want them to be and if I
wanted to make a wooden troop seat I would choose a stick that was tough,
shock resistant, dense, naturally oily with interlocking grain and if I
could buy second hand stick would do so, buy home grown if possible when
second hand unavailable, buy imported stick if home grown did not meet spec
and try not to buy one of the many endangered species.

Thanks to my friends, fans and others for helping make my life fun. Also
with this thought 'I know Jack Schitt and some of his family' and am here to
learn more.
