Hi Stu,
I am sure this will stir up a flame or two. My trucks are all "working
trucks". A lot of the guys on this list are historians with perfection
in mind. While I do not want to spend money that will perfectly
restore a truck, I still have to consider if there will be long term
damage from continuing to run under less than perfect conditions.
If my engine, transmission, or xfer were working properly and leaking,
I would use some over the counter "liquid mechanic".
I bought a DRMO truck that had sit long enough for the rear main seal
to dry out. When running down the road it would leak a large amount of
oil into the bell housing. This oil would mostly stay there until the
truck stopped, then would profusilly flood out of the bell housing
drain hole. I filled with oil and two bottles of leak stopping fluid.
Next, I ran the truck up to full operating temperature and repeated
this cycle for a few days. I have used this truck now for four or five
years.
The fluid works by attacking the rubber of the seal and softening /
swelling it. Worst case is; you have to replace all seals. I think you
are there now.
On the clutch "pieces" in the trannie. Normal wear will leave some
residue. I always try to be there personally and see what comes out.
My 2 bits.
