Apples and Oranges.

Let's do a real comparison... Ford Super Duty 6.0 liter diesel or Dodge
Cummins with 15,000 lb trailer - 9-11 mpg. 250K+ mile engine design life.

Typical Gas powered SUV 14-16 mpg on gas pulling nothing.

Typical Gas powered SUV pulling 15,000 lb trailer - 5 mpg for the first
50 miles, there after $2.50 dollars per mile being towed with wrecker to
nearest dealer to replace drivetrain.

VW Diesel subcompact - 45 mpg on diesel.

The lesson - want to do some real work - drive a big honking diesel
truck. Want to get great gas mileage - drive a bug. (;->)

I own a Ford Excursion with the 6 liter diesel and it is fantastic. I
get between 18-20 mpg with no trailer (9500 lb gross weight) and get as
low as 9-10 when pulling 15,000 lbs (11,000 lb forklift on triaxle
trailer) 24,500 gross weight. Why the Ford morons decided to nix the
production of the Excursion is beyond me. They never wanted to
advertise it's gas mileage due to the gas hog V10 most came with (about
10mpg downhill with a tailwind). But with the diesel it is actaully a
reasonable vehicle to drive and has power to spare.

Stepping off the soapbox.....
