In the River Medway estuary in Kent, UK, there are ( I hope!)still the
remains of some WW1 U boats towed there after the ceasefire - the engines
were stripped and until the 1980s at least one was still used in local
paper mills. A very hairy DUKW trip ( rough weather) took us out to the
hulks back in the 1980's, they were far gone but a piece of history for
sure.

1917 Germans unleash U-boats
On this day in 1917, Germany announces the renewal of unrestricted submarine
warfare in the Atlantic as German torpedo-armed submarines prepare to attack
any and all ships, including civilian passenger carriers, said to be sighted
in war-zone waters.
