Unless you consider that in trying to move around the
junk on the bank he may have slowed down fast enough
to make the tracks "steer" backwards! He may also
have hit a low spot on the bank which would cause the
same thing to happen.

Check the high-water mark on the side of the ditch, it
IS over the hatch cover.
