Alternators contain (usually) 6 heavy duty silicone diodes. Diodes act as
one
way valves and let current pass only in one direction. In the other
direction,
they block the flow of current.... or most of it. All diodes have a reverse
leakage current specification. In other words, they draw a little current
from
you battery(s) when the engine is not running. Over a period of time, they
will discharge your battery if left connected and the engine un-run.

My 151A2 had what I thought was an alternator problem drawing the battery
down. It actually may have been the starter switch which can get to the
point
of actually passing enough current to spin the starter fast enough that you
can
hear it! Anyways, I installed a battery disconnect switch in the top side
cover
of the battery cover so that it was facing me. With anything in the middle,
you
could not see it so it also doubled as an anti-theft/tinker device at shows.

Steve AKA Dr Deuce

PS: Generators do not have diodes. They use the commutator and a relay. When
off, there is not leakage drain on the batteries
