It does, there is a butterfly fuze in the base of most types of HE 40mm
grenades. However, this can be "armed" by just twirling it in your
hand/air several times, even by accident. Then, it would simply take
the round being fired to detonate the fuze. There have been several
instances on this occuring in the past, by accident.

A friend of mine who is still active duty knew of one guy who used to
play with 40mm grenades like this out of boredom until he blew one up
one day. Very much injured, he was.
