If it's allowed to mix with air and come down slower, wouldn't that be better. Start back from the intake and move in? Not unlike slowing down a fire first and then finally extinguishing it.

If you can't stop the fuel supply (because it's oil blowing past the rings or something) then the engine's going to blow up anyhow.
