During WW2 - it was tough to get...and was alcohol based..
My dad had a Whippet...an old car --worth a fortune today.... He and Claus
Nebel - in 1945...on Staten Island - New York...had the car in the
driveway --outside Claus's kitchen down near Midland Beach.. ... They were
putting some "bootleg" white lightening in it for antifreeze... There must
have been a leak in the head gasket ---the engine exploded....and my dad and
Klaus were on fire...They could not see the alcohol burning.... Both had
some pretty serious burns..and the Whippet was a total loss... I learned
from that one experience...NEVER use alcohol for antifreeze....even though -
what they sold in the 50's and before was alcohol based....
