I think this meant for a Mr. Phillips, not me, I shy away from towing
big stuff.

RE>[chrispho: towing 6X6] 3/6/97

The 6X6 weighs typically over 14000 lbs. Even if the pickup was a REAL =
STOUT pickup, there isn't enough weight in the pickup to do it safely. =
The drive train might or might not survive. An automatic transmission =
might well overheat, cook the trans. fluid and destroy the transmission. =
But that's the least of your worries. What if you ever had to stop that =
beast in a hurry? Handling would be terrible. That 6X6 would push you all =
over the place.

6X6's DO tow real well behind the tracked, dual 6 cyl APCs, though, as =
long as you're not going through any ditches that are too deep. =
Otherwise, the ride can be a little rough. I speak from experience, here. =
The APC doesn't seem to know or care that the 6X is back there.

APC's are good for towing aircraft (A-1, F-9, B-47, A-4, F-11B, and =
others that I know of for sure), too - we once towed a B-47 23 miles =
across open desert. Took all day, 'cause we had to make our own roads.

The only thing that seems to be better than that is a tank retriever.

Pickup? We tried to move one with one of the Navy pickups here. It didn't =
move well at all (we were only trying to go a few hundred feet), and it =
took a lot out of the truck (open desert again). They really aren't =
geared low enough, or heavy enough.

2 more cents worth.

Sounds like a bad idea to me, I have had 6x6 towed by professional rigs =
here
in Baltimore area, cost was only $225 for about same milage, recently had =

DUKW put on a Landall (Big tractor trailer rig) cost was only $350 for =
about
a 180 mile round trip. I would be more worried about stopping versus =
pulling
the thing.
My 2 cents worth
Regards

Is it possible to tow a 6X6 drive lines removed around a100 miles without
damage (clutch failure or other) to a 1/2 ton pickup? Has any one tried
this or has experience which could help me?

Thanks for all the help.
