This is great! The strength of this group is the solid expertise of so many
of the participants. Now, where is the response from MVPA to our fact-based
requests to them?

I guess that I would view the DOT Safety Standards, as they would apply to
the HMMWV, as follows:

1. No Park position on Auto. Transmission: What makes this any different
from driving a standard transmission. When you stop, you place it in
Neutral and set the brake. I was a Transportation Officer for several years
and never saw an accident caused because of this. I will not say that it
has never happened, so please don't frag me on this. But with some common
sense, and proper familiarity with a vehicle such as this, I don't think
it's an issue.

2. No proper side impact protection: I would as the DOT how Chrysler has
gotten away with this for their Wranglers. You can go down any road and
have an example of vehicles with canvas doors, or at the very least, doors
that have about the protection in them of a piece of tin foil. These would
include the Samarais, Sidekicks, Trackers, etc... The HMMWV's that we had
used Kevlar doors, with plenty of reinforcement behind them. I would sooner
have Kevlar over aluminum and a fancy plastic door panel.

If these reasons are what they are basing their discrimination on the Hummer
by, I think that it would be an easy case for the MVPA to win, and then
start working the M151 situation. Just my thoughts.

Thanks,
Sean
