[MV] Export of MV parts, scaremongering, etc.

Douglas Greville:

I read with interest about your fear of a lack of avalability of parts for
your US MV. While I certainly sympatize with your his concern, I feel that
asking the MVPA to investigate all statements made by their advertisers or
web site links, or worse ban certain entities without investgation and at
your sole discretion and direction is a patently absurd request. The two
major points you make which might, at first glance, appear reasonable are
as follows:

1. The MVPA holding itself out to be an international organization, while
providing a link to a site which (you claim) advises against exporting US
MV parts, is somehow contradictory.

In reality, the MVPA is and does, exactly, what they claim to be and do.
Owing to the MVPA and as a member of the international community, you and
others are made aware of companies and individuals who may (or may not)
sell you parts. By the same means, you are also made aware of the
cautionary notices published by MSH. What more could you reasonably
expect? What could be more fair? I don't believe the MVPA ever intended
to be or claimed to be an organization to oversee the worldwide and
equitable distribution of MV parts.

2. Because (you claim) MSH is advising people not to export parts, parts
will not be exported.

First of all, my reading of the MSH Notice you published doesn't appear, at
all, to be telling anyone not to export parts. On the contrary it seems,
to me, to be telling people WHAT TO DO IF THEY EXPORT or how to LEGALLY
supply parts to an exporter. Be that as it may, even were your contention
accurate, parts have and will continue to be exported on the basis of
numerous factors, one of which is economics. If it makes financial sense
for people to export parts-- they'll do it, regardless of what MSH tells
them. The profit motive is the most powerful incentive people have, if
they can make a buck at it they'll do it, if not, they won't. It's that
simple. If MSH had the power you ascribe to them, namely the power to have
people blindly do as told, then we should have MSH tell kids not to take
drugs. I hate to make it a matter of money, but that's exactly what it is.
If you are willing to pay enough to cover the parts and the aggravation of
complying and cost of exporting, rather than sell domestically, some
profit-minded capitalist will sell them to you. Happens every time the
dollar goes up or down. Goods flow in the direction of the money. No
matter what restrictions are placed on export, real or propaganda, parts
will be exported if it makes economic sense, even if it requires smuggling.

In characterizing MSH's Notice as a directive not to export parts, I
believe it is you who is engaging in exaggeration and propaganda. Your
comment that MSH "takes foreigners' money" is ridiculous. You GIVE them
your money and you're as free to stop giving them your money as they are to
express their view of exporting parts and as free as anyone with parts to
subscribe to their view or not.

I, for one, don't view this as you "having a go" at Americans. I do,
however, find it extremely objectionable that you would seek to deprive all
of us of the free exchange of information by demanding censorship of one
business or another, based on your misrepresentation of their viewpoint, in
order to further your own self interest.

How would you feel if I misinterpreted your posting as an alarmist temper
tantrum, attempting to use an international forum to insure a continued
supply of cheap MV parts and springboarded from that into demanding that
you be unsubscribed?.

You should view this as an opportunity. If exporting is as simple as you
say but no one knows it and parts are unavailable, those are the absolutely
right market conditions for you to step in and supply that demand and make
a fortune in the process. Or you could simply spend your significant effort
educating those suppliers you'd like to deal with in the simplicity and
profitability of exporting to you.

Regards,

Jeff Polidoro
