Hi Mike, the original DUKW hand bilge pump was, and is, useless.
Current opinion is that if you were at the stage where that pump was
the only thing keeping you afloat you would be as well to dive over the
side and swim for shore. It does fill in a space on the front deck and
give you a place to put a " NO STEP " stencil, and that's about it.

I've never seen the type of hand pump you describe in Europe, possibly
post war US conversion as it sounds similar to the two hand bellows
pumps mounted on my LARC 5 rear deck, which, unlike the DUKW unit,
worked remarkably well.

Front brake hose conversion with small metal pipes through hull and
standard CCKW hoses makes sense, especially if you run them through
metal tubes to the wheels as the British Army did. Rear brake hose
conversion just sounds like work, but would cut down on the number of
hoses and flexible leak paths. How much barbed wire do you want to run
over anyway? Buy yourself a good ROTARY gear-drive barrel pump, you'll
need it to fill the transfer case and gearbox. Avoid the direct pull
barrel pumps unless you want to use it principally to keep fit.
