Hi Tom, valve in the front brake line was because they had (have) a
tendancy to wrap barbed wire round the front axle when crossing same
and shear the hoses. DUKW has a stencil with 'close tap before
crossing barbed wire' on it and a painted line leading to the tap.

I've only ever seen them pictured towing a standard 2-wheel one ton
'Ben-Hur' type trailer, though they were made by many different
manufacturers with differing varieties of wood and steel framed body,
and most originally came on civilian tread tyres. They are still
available in Europe and the UK from 400 GBP 600 USD upwards. Gordon,
