Help,

2 1/2 gallons of water inside the front axle of my 1944 DUKW for the last 6+
years has rendered the differential assembly completely worthless. It needs
all new bearings and the corrosion and pitting on the ring and pinion teeth is
terrible. Although I haven't checked the rear axles yet, I suspect they
may be in the same condition.

I know the GMC "banjo" axles were also used in the CCKW and Chevy ton and a
halfs during WWII. To my untrained eyes, it looks like the same axles were
also used under the M135/211 trucks. Does anyone know if this is true?

What I'm thinking about is trying to find good, used differential assemblies
to replace the bad ones in my DUKW. Knowing how many different vehicles used
this type of axle would be helpful.

I'm kind of assuming here (very dangerous) that the differential assemblies
are interchangeable to begin with. I'm aware of the pinion seal differences
between the CCKW and the DUKW differential assemblies. Any other differences
I should know about? Could I use an M135/211 differential assembly as a
replacement in my existing DUKW axle? Is the gear ratio and the axle spline
count the same? If I pull up various part numbers (inner axle shaft, pinion
bearing, carrier, etc) for my DUKW, would someone with a parts manual for an
M135/211 be willing to compare numbers so I can tell if it's all the same
stuff?

Thanks,

Mike Bennett 1944 DUKW
