In my experience, copper tubing is wholly inadequate for use as brake
tubing due to the fact that it, being a realtively soft metal, will not
hold up to the high pressures encountered during hard braking. To my
knowledge, in the US copper is not certified by DOT (Dept. of Trans.),
and is not sold as replacement brake line in any auto parts store. Now,
you can buy copper tubing meant for other purposes and use it as brake
tubing, but why jeopardize your investment (read MV) and your life as
well? You can't go wrong with the steel. And as an aside: to the
gentleman who originally posted the question -- if you decide to make
your own lines, be sure to purchase a double-lap flaring tool, and not
the single-lap tool used for general purpose flaring. Again, this is
for safety reasons. A double-lap will stand up to hard braking, where
single-lap may not.

Mike
