I tried the electrical rust removal process and decided that it was to slow
to be of any value to me. I tried it on a 6" x 10" piece of hot rolled
steel that was heavily rusted on one side and mildly rusted on the other. I
used a 5/8" dia. stainless rod and a 12V battery charger. With the rod a
few inches from the steel I was able to draw about 2 amps off of the
charger. After 8 hrs. the piece was blackened and material would slough off
when scrubbed with a Chore Girl scouring pad. The mildly rusted side showed
some conversion while the heavily rusted side still had a lot of rust.
After another 10 hrs. the mildly rusted side was completely converted and
the heavily rusted side still had spots that were still rusted.
So I'll still use Rust Mort or one of the chemical converters as they
usuall do the job overnight and I'm ready to paint in the morning.
