[MV] LAND TRAIN

Hi.

Does anyone remember the "Land Train"? This was a 50's- (or early
60's)-vintage monster developed by ?? to ship container-sized cargo
cross-country, should the major interstates be damaged. As I recall, it had
gas turbine motive power, driving hydraulic hubs in each tire of each car in
the train. It was at least five or six cars long, all hooked together, and
all the size of modern containers (8'x8'x40'). It had one gas turbine
"locomotive" in the front, and another bringing up the rear. The tires were
enormous things, something like 10' tall. It looked very much like a
freight train with huge tires, running across the desert! Must have been a
sight to see underway.

I remember seeing it come up for surplus sale sometime in the late 60's or
early 70's. They (I don't remember who "they" was) wanted $250K for the
thing. Anybody got any substantive information on this beast? I wonder
what happened to it? Would be a hoot at Glamis over Thanksgiving.

Pete
