[MV] Rules of etiquette on the MIL-VEH list

A few people have recently diverted the list from discussions of
military vehicles. Whether they were inadvertent or merely thoughtless
is immaterial. However, I am compelled to once again post the rules
under which I operate this list. Break these rules at your own
peril. The consequence? I will unsubscribe you.

HOUSE RULES
There aren't that many rules, and those few are basically common
sense. Follow these and we'll all be happy. To keep the message
traffic flowing smoothly, keep these in mind when you post to the
mil-veh list:

* Do not quote extensively from a previous post.

Instead, be sure to edit the previous poster's message to the
absolute minimum necessary to indicate the topic and then add
your comments.

Do NOT quote an entire message and merely add "I agree" or "This
makes me angry" or "Me too." That wastes both bandwidth and the
membership's time.

* Do NOT post messages in MIME, NeXTmail, or HTML format.

I will begin sending warning messages to people who post messages
in MIME format.

* Be sure to write a descriptive Subject header for your message.

If you don't, people are less likely to read and respond to your
request. Furthermore, majordomo will not add [MV] to the Subject,
and those who sort their mail based on that tag are more likely
to miss your post.

* By default, replies are directed to the original poster.

There is good reason for this. Do not post "Me too" or "I was
wondering this, too" messages. You're talking to over 400 people
when you hit that Send button.

Note that if you reply to the list, there is no need to also reply
to the original poster. Edit your To: header appropriately.

* Please include your general location when offering something large
for sale.

* Do not send mail to the lists with a Read Receipt requested.

It generates unnecessary traffic and is considered quite
rude by some.

* Finally, and this is very important, DO NOT POST PERSONAL ATTACKS.

If for some reason you feel compelled to flame someone, take it
to private e-mail. But do not clutter the list with your personal
opinions on some inflammatory matter.

If someone posts something that makes you want to grab them by
the throat and shake them, take a deep breath and DO NOT IMMEDIATELY
SNAP OFF A REPLY TO THE LIST. If you really want to say something,
send e-mail directly to that person, preferably a day or two
later.

Remember, we are here because we share a common love, and we are
here to help each other achieve common goals. Keep your conversations
civil and respectful.

Follow these simple rules, and all will be well. I reserve the right
to unsubscribe you if you violate these courteous, common sense
rules. If you don't like them, unsubscribe now. That said, the
mil-veh list is for your enjoyment. I run it as a service to the
Internet community, currently at no cost to you. Thanks for your
consideration.
