Another piece of information on driving these trucks. I know of a person
who went to court to fight a ticket because he was driving an M35 without a
Class B License, here in California. The ruling was, if:
1. The vehicle is registered as a historic vehicle.
2. It's used for personal, non-commercial purposes.
3. All insurance requirements are met (obvious)
Then you can drive it with a regular Class C license. I will get the court
number and code if I can for you California drivers. For everyone else, you

may want to check very carefully, as you may not have to go through the
medical and DMV testing. Something else to check is the air brake issue.
Air over hydraulic doesn't constitute air brakes. If the truck has true air

brakes then the Class B (or A) with an air brake sign off may still need to
be done.

Sean -

As I am currently pursuing my Commercial Drivers License for job
requirements, I thought I'd let you know some of what Texas (info may apply
to other states, as well) has to say about the larger vehicles.

If the GVW is over 26,001 lbs., you must have either a Class A or a Class B
license. Anywhere under this, you only need a Class C. If the trailer being
pulled is 10,000 lb GVW or greater, you need the Class A. If you are
carrying more than 15 passengers or carrying passengers for hire, you need
the Class B.

M-35's and similar 2.5 Ton trucks are under 26,000 GVW. M-54's and other 5
Tons, etc., are over 26,000 GVW.

However, if the truck has Ag plates, or certain other special plates, you can
get out of the CDL requirements. I am still looking into this matter.

Also, in Texas (may also apply to other states), you can apply for a historic
military vehicle category. This means no license plates on the vehicle, no
inspection stickers, etc. There are certain requirements that are needed,
but they are minimal.

Hope this helps
