Hi Rob, I have never done professional painting before, but the stuff I have done, and
over sandblasted surfaces, REQUIRE that you prime first.
As far as 'restoring' the paint to original, I refer you to the newly published
'Vehicle Judging Form' from the MVPA. In one column they give points for
originality. If you'r are going to go for the points, I would ask MVPA just what the
heck they want, otherwise I would paint it with a two-part water based epoxy, of which
there are several 'systems' around. I hope you live in a dry climate, as rust will start
to form right after sandblasting in some climates. Primer will help to smooth the
surface for final paint but also keep in mind that primer requires a sealer coat as part
of the overall paint job. I made the mistake of sandblast/primer and not painting some
sheet metal once and had a lot of work to get it ready for final coat because of my lack
of knowledge. How about going to a good auto paint supply house and talking to the guys?
Also, ask about the new way of spraying paint, HVLP, which is high-volume, low pressure.
It is the way to go as far as my amateur self goes. Good Luck.
Again, check on HVLP and water based epoxy paint, your lungs and your neighbors will
like you more for it.

Hey, is everyone one vacation out there? It seems the messages went to a low point the
last few days. Just wondering.
